In Memoriam: The Honourable Justice Ronald D. Bell
We are saddened to hear of the death of our founding partner Ron Bell on January 13, 2020.
Ron was one of the first lawyers in Canada to specialize in the practice of tax law. Then in May of 1978, he led a team of four lawyers to open the tax boutique firm Bell Felesky Iverach. As it has grown to a firm of almost 50 lawyers his way of approaching legal problems has been steadfastly maintained. He would often ask: “How can we solve this tax issue if we don’t start by focusing on and understanding the nature of the true legal relationships that are, or should be, involved? Remember we are lawyers, first and foremost.”
Ron was appointed as a Judge of the Tax Court of Canada in 1991 where he brought his superb intellect to bear on a wide range of complex and difficult legal issues.
Ron was not just an outstanding lawyer and jurist. He had a flair for, and a deep appreciation of, good architecture and interior design. He was a pianist and a serious art collector. He was Chancellor of Brandon University and a generous philanthropist. He was surrounded by friends from all walks of life who shared his zest for living life to the fullest.
Ron Bell was a pioneer, a mentor and a friend. We will miss him.
